On transient type
[post updated on 25.08.10]
This book is being edited and produced by Ray Keys of Yiiyi Press. It’s written and designed by Letterfit studio, London and its content is divided into four sections:
• On transient type & techniques (about designing type, specifically)
• On transient typography (about applying & observing type in use)
• Photo galleries: type & lettering transience
• Postscript & Addendum: ‘On transience’ (thoughts about another essay)
There are a few reasons why these texts are not currently posted. The first is a matter of courtesy. Other books are mentioned as excerpts – and these authors and publishers have been contacted to allow them time to approve the context in which these are mentioned. All of this is done in keeping with the strictest standards of ‘fair use quotes’ – but in the end, both author and publisher of this new book agreed it was best to make contact and allow those concerned to have their review of this text before its public posting.
The other reasons are editorial (selecting what’s appropriate for the web) and practical (not posting too much of an involved text which will soon be offered for sale as a book). Here’s a glimpse of the currently favoured cover design – more soon:
